Abstract

Fluorescence measurements on a Tm,Ho:YLF laser crystal pumped by a laser diode have been made. From the fluorescence data the upconversion rate constant q for this crystal was calculated. The value, q=5 × 1018 cm3/s, was found to be 5 times smaller compared to Tm,Ho:YAG. Upconversion in laser diode pumped Tm,Ho:YLF was calculated to cause an increase in the laser threshold by a factor of 1.26.
