Abstract

We show that the gain gradient introduced when pumping a solid-state laser with a gaussian beam can be used to obtained large gaussian modes from unstable resonators. Very high efficiencies and high quality beams have been obtained using gain guiding in an unstable Ti:Al2O3 laser.
