Abstract

Velocities are measured with a Doppler-LIDAR by measuring the frequency shift of the backscattered radiation. This Doppler-shifted signal is heterodyned with a local oscillator radiation which has the same frequency as the transmitted signal. The laser of this Doppler-LIDAR technique combines three functions of a LIDAR.

  1. The laser is the transmitter of radiation.
  2. It acts as a amplifier of the backscattered signal.
  3. It serves the local oscillator radiation.
