Abstract

On the basis of complete investigations of Mg2SiO4:Cr crystals, including EPR, optical and kinetic spectroscopic methods, as well as a new technique for studying ion-ion interactions, the Cr4+ nature of the lasing center and the exclusively negative role of Cr3+ ions have been ascertained. Forsterite material properties and laser performance with laser and lamp pumping are described. The results indicate encouraging prospects for Mg2SiO4:Cr4+ tunable lasers.
