Abstract
Continuous wave laser emission at 1.50μm from the 3H4→3F4 transition in Tm3+:YLiF4 at room temperature is reported. This transition is normally self-terminating owing to the long lifetime of the 3F4 state. Here the 3F4 state is partially quenched through transfer of energy to the 5I7 state of HO3+ codopant ions. Quenching of the 3F4 state is enhanced by simultaneously operating the Ho3+ 5I7➝5I8 laser transition.
