Abstract

Efficient laser action has been observed in a monomode Yb3+-doped fibre at 974nm (three level transition) and at 1036nm, with output powers of 9.3mW and 15.7mW respectively and slope efficiencies of 67% and 77% respectively. Q-switched operation yielded pulses of 25ns at 974nm and 100ns at 1041nm. Tunable cw operation from 1010nm to 1162nm has been demonstrated. In addition, efficient superfluorescent emission has been observed at 974nm and around 1040nm with output powers of 10mW and 31mW respectively and slope efficiencies of 45%.
