Abstract

Two novel high gain optical interactions using an Er:YLF laser operating at 1.73 µm have been demonstrated, parametric amplification of a 3.39 µm HeNe in AgGaSe2 and second harmonic generation in LiNbO3. While parametric amplification corresponded closely to model expectations, second harmonic generation did not, primarily because of poor crystal quality. A method of assessing crystal quality is vividly demonstrated.
