Abstract

We present test results and comparative analysis of 32-ary Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) free space optical (FSO) communication links with (Mid-Wave Infra-Red) MWIR Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) and Telecom (Short-Wave Infra-Red) SWIR transceivers. Atmospheric turbulence was simulated in the laboratory environment with custom phase plates. We provide a detailed analysis of Word and Bit Error Rates with the utilization of optimized Gray coding. This work compares performance of the Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) efficient MWIR and SWIR FSO concepts.
