Coherent Technologies for Next Generation Flexible Converged Wireless-Wireline Access Networks

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In this article, we introduce optical coherent detection based access networks intended for next generation converged wireless-wireline passive optical networks (PONs). We identify problems with currently employed PON technologies based on time division multiplexing (TDM) and direct detection, present experimental demonstrations of converged systems, and present a solution based on reuse of existing fiber links.
