Abstract

The security of our critical infrastructure is threatened by the advent of future quantum computers, breaking asymmetric cryptography – an essential part of our secure communication architecture. Quantum key distribution (QKD) remedies this weakness by providing a long term secure solution, safe against attacks from quantum computers. Satellites currently provide the only feasible way of connecting local metropolitan quantum networks over global distances. We present our work, performed in the Quantum Information Processing group in Erlangen, Germany and its planned spin-off company InfiniQuant towards developing an economically viable solution for a globally secure communication architecture.
