Abstract
The fiber photonics section at NRL develops fiber optic and photonic sensing technology and devices that address current and future needs of the Navy. Specific focus areas include sensing technologies for structural monitoring and undersea surveillance with an emphasis on sensor science and technology development. The section undertakes both fundamental research into new sensing techniques and phenomenology in addition to application specific research where existing technologies are applied to new problems. Some of the technologies that will be discussed include: fiber laser sensors, distributed sensors based on Brillouin scattering, and fiber tip sensors.
