Distributed sensing using coherent Rayleigh scattering can turn standard fiber optic cable into an array of thousands of virtual strain and temperature sensors covering up to 50km per system. A summary of the application of this technology to border and infrastructure protection, transportation, oil and gas production and exploration, and regional seismology will be presented.
