Abstract
A novel silicon add-drop filter based on apodized grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) is demonstrated. The coupling apodization is achieved by modulating the superposition of the two gratings in a contra-DC. As the local effective index of the gratings remains unchanged, our designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility. The experimental results show that our device, has strong sidelobe suppression with a SLSR of 18 dB and a 15-dB bandwidth of 1.7 nm. The add-drop filter is appropriate for silicon wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical interconnects.
