Abstract

In optical communication systems, post-FEC performance is traditionally predicted by the pre-FEC BER. This metric can become less accurate when these systems utilize higher order modulation formats or increased FEC overhead. Alternative metrics based on mutual information have been recently suggested to provide a more accurate estimation of the post FEC performance. We discuss these metrics and their suitability for different modulation formats.
