Fraunhofer Diffraction Patterns of Squares and Rectangles

Abstract

The Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of a basic set of squares and rectangles have been computed by summation. The resulting tables are presented and methods are described for building up more complicated diffraction patterns in terms of this set. The limited nature of each table introduces systematic errors for large objects. These errors are discussed and estimates of their magnitudes are given for particular cases by comparison with those cases for which analytical solutions are available.
