Abstract

Nanowire based LEDs have attracted a lot of interests due to its potential applications in high density optoelectronic circuits, high sensitive sensing and high resolution imaging [1, 2]. They have much higher extraction efficiency by taking the advantages of the one dimensional structure to overcome the total internal reflection problems. Furthermore, the confinement of photons and electrons in one dimensional nanostructures will give more possibilities for the occurring of new phenomena such as surface plasmon polariton enhanced emission, exciton emission and piezo-phototronic effect. However, the low efficiency caused by the large nonradiative recombination and high fabrication cost due to difficulties in precisely doping of nanowires of previously reported nanowire LED still limit its practical applications.
