Abstract

This work describes the evaluation of a 3-D printed all plastic POF sensor for real-time monitoring of spine bending for biomedical applications. The correlation and evaluation of POF sensor against a conventional spine monitoring Biometrics goniometer on sagittal and lateral spine bending assessment is presented. 18 healthy subjects were recruited for the field test to simultaneously compare the performance of the POF sensor against goniometer at different spine posture. The POF sensor shows a good performance and linearly correlated with the Biometrics sensor with a correlation coefficient, R2 of 0.8696 for bending in sagittal plane and 0.8599 in lateral plane. This study evaluated the validity of POF sensor for analyzing bending of lumbar spine in both sagittal and lateral directions.
