Optical Materials Express Feature Announcement

Two-Dimensional Materials for Photonics and Optoelectronics

Submission Opens:15 March 2016

Submission Deadline: 14 April 2016

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are crystalline materials consisting of a single layer or a few layers of atoms. They have numerous applications in electronics, photonics, and optoelectronics at the nanoscale. Since the isolation of graphene in 2004, a tremendous amount of research has been directed at synthesizing graphene and other 2D materials, including transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus. This feature issue is aimed at scientists, engineers and practitioners interested in understanding the novel physical phenomena found in 2D materials and exploring their potential applications.

The issue will focus on the synthesis, optical functionality, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials, ranging from the fundamental understanding of light-2D-material interaction to the realization of 2D-material-based photonic or optoelectronic devices. The aim is to showcase new developments in the research field of 2D materials within the context of photonics and optoelectronics.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • 2D material synthesis.
  • Characterization (such as TEM, AFM, etc.) and optical spectroscopy (such as absorption, Raman, photoluminescence, etc.) of 2D materials.
  • Understanding of new physical phenomena including photo dynamics, nonlinear optical processes such as second or higher-order harmonic generation, nonlinear absorption, nonlinear refraction, etc.
  • Photonic and optoelectronic devices based on 2D materials including photo-detectors, photovoltaic cells, light emitting diodes, optical modulators, lasers, optical frequency converters, polarizers, terahertz devices, waveguides, transparent electrodes, etc.

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. Papers will be published online upon acceptance and, once all papers have been published, a virtual feature issue with a table of contents will appear. Normal Optical Materials Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles.

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual guidelines for submission to Optical Materials Express and must be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system. Please specify that the manuscript is for the Two-Dimensional Materials for Photonics and Optoelectronics feature (choose from the feature issue drop-down menu).
