2D FEM simulations visualizing the propagation of a Gaussian beam in the effective medium regimes. The beam can propagate unaffected through an “unrestricted effective” medium, but is quickly separated into different bundles in a “restricted” medium. In a heterogeneous material the directionality is completely lost after several wavelengths. For details, see D. Werdehausen, et al., Optical Materials Express 8, 3456-3469 (2018)
