Abstract
We demonstrate the formation of a stable refractive-index grating with nearly degenerate four-wave mixing in a photorefractive strontium barium niobate crystal. This is accomplished with a mode-locked argon-ion laser source and an acousto-optic modulation frequency that is synchronized with the laser pulse repetition rate. The short laser pulses sample the rf waveform at the same phase of each acoustic cycle, thereby writing the grating at the same spatial position within the strontium barium niobate crystal.
