Abstract
Photothermal beam-deflection spectroscopy has been used to measure the ratio between the thermal and nonthermal lensing in Nd3+-doped glass that arises after optical pumping. The nonthermal refractive-index amplitude is due to the difference in polarizability of Nd3+ ions in the metastable 4F3/2 state versus the 4I9/2 ground state. The experiments show that the change in the polarizability for Nd3+-doped ED-2 silicate glass is Δα = 0.05 (±0.01) Å3.
