Feature Announcement Optics Express

Topological Photonics and Materials

Submission Opens:1 May 2018

Submission Deadline: 1 June 2018

Optics Express welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Topological Photonics and Materials." This issue will act as a platform for gathering the most recent developments in topological photonics and materials with the goal of moving the field forward to explore the striking physics of topology in optics and the applications as well. The guest editors seek work related to the topological properties of photons in periodic photonic crystals, metamaterials, metasurfaces, and opto-electronic materials. Fundamental open questions in the field of topological photonics as well as applications to photonic circuits and robust wave propagation in disordered media will be covered. We encourage submissions of both theoretical works in developing new concepts and experimental works in applying topological ideas to optics.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Non-trivial degeneracy in photonic band structures (e.g., Weyl point, line node, knot)
  • Bosonic topological insulators
  • Experimental realization of topological optical systems
  • Methods in defining spin-1 topological invariants in photonic systems
  • Topological photonics beyond pseudo-spin, covering spin-orbit coupling of light, spin-momentum locking, chirality, vortices, etc.
  • Extension of topological studies to non-Hermitian systems (e.g., Parity-time symmetry)
  • Optical properties of electronic topological materials, including 2D materials, plasmons in electronic topological insulators, and topological phase transitions in superconductors

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journals. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through OSA's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the Feature Issue on Topological Photonics and Materials.
