Feature Issue of Optics Express

3D Image Acquisition and Display: Technology, Perception and Applications

Submission Opens:1 July 2020

Submission Deadline: 1 September 2020

Optics Express welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "3D Image Acquisition and Display: Technology, Perception and Applications" in conjunction with the OSA Imaging and Applied Optics Congress, which will be held virtually. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

The goal of this feature issue will be to bring together contributions by outstanding international leaders, researchers, and engineers from a broad range of interdisciplinary fields to present their work in the science, technology, and applications of 3D image collection and display technologies, including augmented and virtual reality head mounted devices. This meeting will cover research areas related to the acquisition, display, and applications of 3D information as well as the perception, human factors, and visual comfort of 3D information displays.

Research related to scientific understanding of 3D information display and perception, technological innovation on 3D image acquisition or display methods, and task-specific design and applications of 3D acquisition or display technology are of particular interest. The feature issue intends to cover hardware, algorithms, devices, and systems for 3D imaging, 3D visualization, wearable displays such as augmented reality displays, micro 3D displays, 3D displays, 3D TV/Video, and biomedical applications in these domains. This issue will describe recent developments, as well as the prospects and challenges facing 3D imaging, visualization, and display systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Science and engineering of 3D information collection and display technologies
  • Acquisition, display, and applications of 3D information
  • Wearable display methods and technologies including augmented reality and virtual reality devices
  • Micro-displays
  • User interface technologies for 3D systems
  • Image processing for 3D acquisition or display applications
  • Visual perception, human factors, and visual comfort of 3D information displays
  • Applications of 3D image acquisition or display technologies, including virtual reality, augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, wearable displays, and entertainment
  • Healthcare applications including biomedicine, microscopy, endoscopy, medical and scientific visualization
  • Defense and security
  • Optical engineering design of 3D information acquisition and display technology
  • Sensor technology for 3D
  • 3D Display hardware and software technologies
  • LiDAR

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see OSA's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through OSA's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on 3D Image Acquisition and Display.
