Abstract
This paper discusses how to obtain distribution patterns of the refractive-index gradient in space for natural convection in an aqueous medium by the schlieren-background method. The images were processed by direction-field methods with various parameters. A comparison is made, and recommendations are given for choosing processing parameters to maximize the accuracy of the result. © 2004 Optical Society of America
