JOSA B Feature Announcement

Mid-Infrared Coherent Sources and Applications

Submission Opens: 15 April 2016

Submission Deadline: 30 June 2016

This JOSA B feature issue is based on the OSA Topical meeting on Mid-Infrared Coherent Sources (MICS), which will be held 20-22 March 2016 in Long Beach, California, USA. While the meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, this feature issue is open to all contributions. All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journals. To be eligible for publication, any paper from a MICS participant needs to add substantial and/or significant new information to the original conference summary.

This feature issue will be focused on the most recent advances in mid-IR to THz science and technology, from materials to laser sources and applications. The feature will bring together the latest developments in materials, solid-state and fiber lasers, semiconductor and quantum cascade lasers, nonlinear frequency conversion and parametric devices, optical frequency comb and continuum sources, as well as the application of mid-IR and THz sources in trace gas detection and sensing, spectroscopy, frequency metrology and synthesis, imaging, optical microscopy, and biomedicine.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Materials for mid-IR and THz Sources:
    • Active ion-doped dielectric and semiconductor crystals
    • Semiconductor materials and novel micro/nanostructures
    • Specialty nonlinear fibers
    • Nanomaterials
    • Nonlinear optical materials and structures for mid-IR
  • Mid-IR and THz Coherent Sources:
    • Semiconductor lasers
    • Mid-IR and THz quantum cascade lasers
    • Optically pumped semiconductor lasers
    • Solid-state and fiber lasers
    • Optical parametric sources
    • Ultrashort pulse lasers and frequency combs
    • High-intensity ultrafast sources
    • High-power, high-energy sources
    • Broadband and continuum sources
    • THz generation with ultrashort pulsed lasers and nonlinear optics
  • Applications of mid-IR and THz sources in:
    • Remote sensing, imaging
    • Spectroscopy, trace gas detection, breath analysis
    • Optical frequency synthesis, comb spectroscopy
    • Laser surgery, biomedicine
    • Materials processing
    • Optical microscopy, biophotonics
    • Nonlinear optics, attosecond physics

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to JOSA B and uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the Feature Issue on Mid-Infrared Coherent Sources and Applications.
