Our homes, offices, and cars are embedded with a variety of sensors capable of providing information, via appropriate data processing units, to properly comprehend our environment. One major sensing component that plays a significant role, mainly, but not only, in autonomous cars, is lidar. Lidar technologies operating in both terrestrial and airborne scenarios are also commonly used in high-resolution photonic sensing in a large variety of fields such as geology, archaeology, seismology, agriculture, atmospheric sciences, control, and navigation. This joint feature issue will highlight recent developments in sources and detectors as well as theory, design, and data processing algorithms for lidar.

Topics to be covered include but are not limited to:

  • Phased array and steering techniques
  • Time gated 3D sensors
  • 3D sensing algorithms
  • Fusion of data from multiple lidar and super resolution
  • Sensor combinations for multiple object detection
  • Single-photon lidar; single-photon sensors and algorithms
  • Lidar and flash lidar light sources
  • Lidar configurations: Chaotic lidar, Ghost imaging lidar, Scheimpflug LID lidar AR, Polarization lidar
  • Scanners and optical design

Authors may choose between JOSA A and JOSA B when submitting to the joint feature issue, but should recognize the differences between them and select the appropriate journal. The guest editors may recommend transferring a manuscript to the other journal as needed. Papers on sources and detectors will be appropriate for JOSA B, and work on theory, design and algorithms should be submitted to JOSA A. Papers will appear in their respective journals. Additionally, a combined table of contents of papers from both journals will appear once all papers are published.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the Journals. Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual guidelines for submission to JOSA A and JOSA B and must be uploaded through Prism's manuscript submission system. When submitting, please specify that the manuscript is for the "Lidar" feature issue (choose from the drop-down menu).
