Abstract
A synchronously pumped fiber Raman laser with a nonlinear index has been studied under parabolic approximation for gain-shaping effects in both the frequency and the time domains. Gain shaping due to the synchronous pumping is dominant for low Stokes intensity. With increasing Stokes intensity, self-phase modulation plays an important role and considerably shortens the Stokes pulse. The characteristics of the Stokes pulse width, the Stokes intensity, and frequency tuning are discussed theoretically. The laser can emit optical solitons when the self-phase modulation balances the group-velocity dispersion of the fiber.
