Abstract
The change in the propagation characteristics of a high-energy laser beam traversing a dense collection of carbon particles, as the irradiated carbon particles undergo combustion, is calculated by means of the radiative transfer equation. This allows one to predict the spatiotemporal shape of a laser pulse. The effects of the changing size distribution of the burning carbon particles on the propagation are also discussed.
