Abstract
The Strehl ratio has an upper bound, in the class of real-valued pupil functions that have a specified Rayleigh limit β, that is strictly less than the least upper bound in the class of complex-valued pupil functions with the same Rayleigh limit, provided β lies between 139% and 223% of the classical Rayleigh limit j11. This upper bound is the maximum Strehl ratio when 1.39j11 ≤ β ≤ 1.77j11, but not otherwise.
