Abstract
This paper presents a viewing distance-aware method for backlight dimming
of liquid crystal displays. Based on a fast selection of the area of critical
image distortion, the proposed algorithm
determines a clipping point at which the resulting distortion remains acceptable
for a given viewing distance, even as backlighting-and hence, power consumption-is
minimized. Experiments using a variety of HD images demonstrate the effectiveness
of proposed method, as provides higher image quality at shorter viewing distances
and higher power savings at longer viewing distances, regardless of the nature
of the image.
