Feature issue of Biomedical Optics Express

Mid-Infrared Lasers for Medical Applications

Biomedical Optics Express welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Mid-Infrared Lasers for Medical Applications." This issue will focus on the most recent advances in the field of mid-infrared (MIR) lasers for medical applications, including tissue imaging, reconstruction, excision, and ablation. In particular, devices and systems that utilize lasers emitting between 3 µm and 30 µm will be highlighted.

The mid-IR wavelength region is a fruitful area for medical research and instrumentation since this is the region where the most identifiable molecules absorb and radiate. Due to the unique specificity of a biological molecule's spectrum in the MIR, lasers in this wavelength regime have a unique advantage over ultraviolet and visible or near-IR lasers. Common MIR emitters for biomedical applications include CO2 lasers, free electron lasers (FELs), optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), fiber lasers, and semiconductor laser diodes.

Areas to be covered will include:

  • Light interaction with various tissue types
  • Differential interaction of cancer versus healthy tissue
  • Laser surgery
  • Applications in dentistry, ophthalmology, dermatology, gynecology, oncology, neurosurgery, urology, and ENT
  • Collateral damage during laser excision
  • Disinfection and wound healing
  • Tissue imaging
  • Neural stimulation
  • Blood and breath analysis
  • Skin rejuvenation

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. The standard Biomedical Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles.
