Optics at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev: introduction to the focus issue

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This feature issue highlights some current applied optics and photonics research activities taking place at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel at its various campuses in Beer-Sheva, Sde Boker, and the National Center for Advanced Photonics at Yavne. The contributions from such various BGU EO research groups illustrate the wide spectrum and diversity of research activities.

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is the only university in Israel to grant graduate degrees in electrooptics. Participating in this research are faculty members who specialize in optics and photonics, and who supervise theses and dissertations, thus giving rise to a very broad interdisciplinary program including optical and THz communication, optical and non-optical imaging, optoelectronic devices, biomedical optics, solar energy, atmospheric optics, lasers, liquid crystals, image processing, computational imaging, compressive imaging, AI-aided imaging, nonlinear optics, silicon photonics, etc. Next year we hope to add a graduate program in quantum technology.

Several examples are in the pages that follow.

On behalf of the BGU optics community we wish to thank the editorial board of Applied Optics for providing us with this opportunity and the staff and reviewers for their generous assistance and service.
