Feature Issue of Applied Optics and Optics Express

Optical Sensors and Sensing 2019

Submission Opens: 1 September 2019

Submission Deadline: 1 October 2019

Applied Optics and Optics Express welcome submissions to a feature issue on "Optical Sensors and Sensing" in conjunction with the Optical Sensors and Sensing Congress in San Jose, CA on 2527 June 2019. The journals will only consider submissions from the oral and poster papers accepted for the meeting.

Research will include updates on the use of optical and photonic approaches related to sensors, augmented by developments in four collocated meetings: Fourier Transform Spectroscopy, Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the Environment, Optical Sensors, and Optics and Photonics for Sensing the Environment.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Novel optical interferometer design
  • Measurement results from Fourier-transform-based space missions
  • Laser frequency comb sensing applications
  • Fourier transform spectroscopy applications and algorithm design
  • Remote sensing in the atmosphere, on the coasts, and over the oceans
  • Optics and photonics for precision agriculture
  • Spectral inversion techniques and radiative transfer modelling
  • Optical fiber sensors
  • Biomedical optical sensors
  • Planar waveguide sensors
  • Quantum effects in optical sensing
  • Non-chemical sensors for defence, aerospace, and food quality control
  • Hyperspectral sensors and imaging
  • Novel laboratory techniques for disruptive sensors
  • Optics and photonics for improved air and water quality
  • Sensors for monitoring fugitive emissions
  • Optics and photonics for extreme environments

Authors may choose between Applied Optics and Optics Express when submitting to the joint Feature Issue, but should recognize the differences between them and select the appropriate journal. The guest editors may recommend transferring a manuscript to the other journal as needed. For Applied Optics, submissions will emphasize the practical applications of science and technology. All other topics will be better suited for Optics Express. Papers will appear in their respective journals. Additionally, a combined table of contents of papers from both journals will appear once all papers are published.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Applied Optics and Optics Express Article Processing Charges/Publication Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see OSA's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics or Optics Express and submit through OSA's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the Feature Issue on Optical Sensors and Sensing 2019.
