Submission Opens: 15 June 2016

Submission Deadline: 1 August 2016

Applied Optics is soliciting original contributions on research topics pioneered by Adolf Lohmann for a feature issue that highlights Prof. Lohmann's continued importance and influence on current research activities.

Adolf Lohmann, who passed away in December 2013, was one of the most original and influential researchers during the second half of the 20th century. An OSA member for 54 years, he was named OSA Fellow in 1968. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the OSA Max Born Award (1984) and the Emmett N. Leith Medal (2008).

Prof. Lohmann's work was honored recently during a symposium at the Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2015 meeting in San Jose, CA, USA. This feature issue will also include invited contributions from several of the speakers at the San Jose symposium.

In his research Prof. Lohmann pioneered a wide range of topics related to information optics, including:

  • Holographic methods
  • Diffractive optics
  • Computer-generated holograms
  • Super-resolution imaging
  • Self-imaging
  • Phase-Space optics
  • Optical computing
  • Fractional Fourier transform

All submissions in these areas and others in which Prof. Lohmann had influence must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Applied Optics; see the Information for Contributors in any printed issue or the OSA Style Guide: style guide. Manuscripts must also be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system: /ao/journal/ao/author.cfm. Please specify that the manuscript is for the Information Optics: Current Research Topics Pioneered by Adolf Lohmann feature (choose from the feature issue drop-down menu).
