The 10m diameter National Ignition Facility target chamber was installed in 1999, with the first 192-beam 1.1 MJ laser shot on 10 March, 2009. Beam alignment from groundbreaking to operations was a monumental engineering achievement. For details see the paper by Burkhart et al., pp. 1136-1157.
