A planar microspectrometer is shown. The device consists of two glass plates that integrate all spectrometer optical components. Lithography has been used for patterning, and the plates are aligned on top of a CCD sensor. The cleaved tip of an optical fiber, which is visible in the left top corner, is used to illuminate the reflective entrance slit. The small dimensions of the device are demonstrated by comparison with a 10 eurocent coin. The 50 mm3 volume is combined with a 6 nm spectral resolution in a 100 nm wavelength bandwidth in the visible range. For details, see the paper by Grabarnik et al., pages 2082-2090.
