Abstract
A balloon-borne ultraviolet Ebert-Fastie spectrometer with a Sekera-type polarimeter is developed mathematically. The basic representation of polarized light by Stokes vector and the utilization of Mueller calculus to predict the performance of the spectrophotopolarimeter is discussed. The Stokes vector of the incident light is determined by a Fourier analysis of a light beam which is modulated by a rotating retardation plate. The effect of imperfect optical elements in the train is discussed, and an elegant, although simple, method of calibration which utilizes only nonperfect optical elements is developed. It is possible to calibrate satisfactorily the entire optical system in only one step as long as the optical elements in the train have some resemblance to their designed function.
