Abstract
A conference on high temperature superconductivity in Beijing was attended by young Chinese scientists, but most foreign experts stayed away. The episode, reprinted by permission from a special report in The New York Times of 15 September 1989, underscored doubts about Chinese academic opportunities after the crushing of the democracy movement.
