Abstract
The experimental technique of dc electric field induced second harmonic generation, which is used to measure the magnitudes and signs of the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of organic liquids, is described. Using this method we have determined the macroscopic third-order nonlinearity of CH2I2 (which is dipolar) as well as the microscopic third-order nonlinearity for a single molecule.
