Abstract
Analytical error estimates are developed for an approximate inversion method [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. 72, 756 ( 1982)] to infer the albedo of single scattering and Legendre moments of the angular-scattering function from the asymptotic die away of the backscattered radiance following a pulse on an optically thick slab target. The errors analyzed are the effects of assuming that a finite slab is infinitely thick, the pulse width is infinitesimally short, and the detector is perfectly timed and perfectly oriented with respect to the incident pulse and the target.
