Abstract
The absorption spectra of all the rare-earth trifluorides except PmF3 and EuF3 were measured in the 90–200-eV region in which the 4d electrons of the rare earths are excited. The spectra were compared with those of the metals and with calculated spectra for some free tripositive rare-earth ions. The spectra of Nd and Tb also were measured to aid in this comparison. The spectra are nearly identical with those of the metals but with somewhat more structure and an increased sharpening of some structures. The principal difference was an increased amount of structure in the continuum region, which is presumably due to the effects of band structure on the decay of the excited states.
