Abstract
A brief outline of the theory of relative intensities in Zeeman effect is given for mixed-multipole lines possessing hyperfine structure. Relative intensities of groups of components ΔM = ±1 and ΔM=0, ±2 are calculated for the line 4615Å. of Bi i as a function of the external magnetic field for the longitudinal (L) and transverse (π, σ) directions of observation. The comparison of the computed intensities with the experimental shows that all of the differences observed between L and π patterns are caused by the interference of magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole radiation and that 10% of the total intensity is due to the electric-quadrupole radiation.
