W. L. Wiese, J. M. Bridges, R. L. Kornblith, and D. E. Kelleher, "Transition Probabilities for Prominent Ar i Lines in the Near Infrared*," J. Opt. Soc. Am. 59, 1206-1212 (1969)
Relative transition probabilities of 81 infrared Ar i lines in the wavelength range from 9000–24 000 Å have been measured with a wall-stabilized arc operating in argon at atmospheric pressure. The large majority of the lines from the 4p–5s and 4p–3d transition arrays has been observed and the measurements are consistent with the J-file-sum rule. The data have been normalized to an absolute scale by utilizing the results of other recent arc and lifetime experiments.

Renormalized to an absolute scale obtained from Klose’s lifetime measurements.16
These values used for putting measured relative values on an absolute scale.
Table II
Measured relative line strengths S, J-file sums (∑S), and mean values of σ2, as obtained from this experiment (normalized to the lifetime data of Klose16) and from the Coulomb approximation (CA) for the various J files of the 4p–5s transition array of Ar i. Paschen notation is used for the levels. Values in parentheses are rough experimental estimates (for partly blended or weak lines) and values superscript a are from the intermediate coupling calculations of Murphy.30 The numbers given in italics in the lower-right corner are the sums ∑2J + 1 and ∑(∑S).
