Abstract
Self-reversal of the R lines from a red ruby sample was investigated at 298°K and 77°K by irradiating different layers of the crystal with blue filtered light. The fluorescence radiation emitted showed self-reversal of the R lines if it subsequently penetrated an unexcited crystal layer of sufficient thickness. The wavenumber difference between peak and valley of the self-reversed lines was determined for different penetration depths and interpreted in terms of Lorentzian and Gaussian line shapes.
