Abstract
Feature Issue on Convergence
We propose a framework for the end-to-end data transfer of low-speed Ethernet electronic data traffic through a shared time-slot time-division multiplexed (TDM) wavelength optical WDM network. Data in the shared time-slot are optically transmitted at each intermediate hop of a route. We consider a shared time-slot wavelength router (STSWR) architecture that allows the bandwidth of a time-slot in a wavelength to be shared by low-speed Ethernet data traffic with unexpired connection duration and travel along the same route from the same source STSWR to the destination STSWR. The shared time-slot of the route is not released until the connection durations of all the connections that are sharing the time-slot have expired. The STSWR with built-in optical time-slot interchangers does not use any wavelength converter and performs optical circuit switching. We demonstrate by simulation the effectiveness and behavior of this network framework in terms of blocking probability.
