Abstract
The modulation transfer of an optical window plate is limited (unless in vacuum conditions) by the temperature boundary layer which develops under a temperature difference across the window. The statistical structure of this boundary layer has a direct influence on the modulation transfer function. The effects of a direct control of this boundary layer structure have been investigated, and the results found show that a substantial improvement of the modulation transfer is possible by proper boundary layer control.
