Abstract
Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) is a transparent piezoelectric material that can easily be grown in the form of large, optically homogeneous, single crystals. A shear strain in the plane normal to the z axis causes the crystal to become biaxial. An electric field parallel to z is coupled to this shear through the piezoelectric coefficient d36. Acoustic resonances may be observed in the KDP plates by a method based on the photoelastic effect. By triggering a flash lamp at selected times during the oscillation cycle, time-resolved pictures of the acoustic mode patterns may be taken. In this way, information concerning the phases and magnitude of the instantaneous strain may be obtained. In this paper the techniques for obtaining the time-resolved patterns are considered.
