Abstract
Fusion splice losses for single-mode fibers have been analyzed statistically by considering an initial core axis offset due to alignment error and a transverse axis movement during the fusion process, which is caused by surface tension effect and fiber end face imperfection. A new parameter k has been introduced to characterize the fusion conditions and the actual splice losses are found to be well explained by using this parameter, along with other practical parameters such as core axis alignment accuracy and fiber parameters.
