Abstract
High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gas media multiply ionized by an intense driving field is modeled macroscopically. The propagation equations for both driving and harmonic fields are solved by taking into account the refractive index of a multiply ionized gas, and respectively the single dipole response of a given ion. The results are discussed in an attempt to explain recent experimental data [D. Popmintchev et al, Science 350, 1225(2015)] on HHG in Ar by an ultraviolet pulse which generate soft x-rays up to 280 eV photon energies.
