Abstract
We present a self-consistent model of the self-organized efficient second-harmonic generation in glass fibers. It is based on the photoionization properties of an atom subject to a pair of harmonically related fields with frequencies ω and 2ω. Such an atom can exhibit anisotropic photoelectron emission. The direction of electron emission depends on the relative phase difference between the harmonic fields, and experimental evidence of the anisotropy has recently been reported.1-3 That it may play a role in fiber second-harmonic generation was suggested by Baranova et al.4
